BEIJING, CHINA – Ivanhoe Mines (TSX: IVN; OTCQX: IVPAF) announced today that Executive Chairman Robert Friedland will be a featured speaker at the prestigious China Development Forum’s first fall summit in Beijing on September 16 this year. The conference’s theme is A New Chapter for China’s Reform and Opening-up.

The China Development Forum, focusing on China’s continuing opening up to the world, is organized by the State Council’s Development Research Center. It is viewed as the most significant conference in China where foreign corporate leaders may exchange views with high-level Chinese government officials, policy makers and senior executives of major Chinese companies and state-owned enterprises.

Mr. Friedland’s presentation will outline the need to fast-track new resource projects to produce key, “green metals” that already are recognized as essential for the world’s rapidly urbanizing future.

“People’s evolving expectations will demand that this dawning Smart Age be accompanied by a lot of appropriately smart thinking when it comes to applying technologies and materials to the planning and building of sustainable cities and the safeguarding of critical environments,” Mr. Friedland said.

“What could be more fundamental to a Smart-Age lifestyle than effectively managing the quality of the air that we all breathe, providing for efficient transportation to help us get around without burning fossil fuels, and distributing – and actually storing – very large volumes of clean electricity?”

Mr. Friedland said the Beijing forum will provide unique opportunities to speak directly with Chinese decision makers and potentially contribute to their awareness of the critical roles that strategic “green metals” can play in helping to effectively apply advanced technologies in urban areas.

“Ivanhoe Mines and other companies associated with Singapore-based Ivanhoe Capital Corporation, including Clean TeQ and VRB Energy, are positioning to be among resource industry leaders at the forefront of the drive to produce and utilize metals such as copper, cobalt, nickel, zinc, platinum-group metals, vanadium and scandium that are vital to help sustain our urbanizing planet.”

Mr. Friedland said Ivanhoe Mines has two very supportive Chinese partners – CITIC Metal and Zijin Mining – helping to develop Ivanhoe’s three principal projects in Southern Africa.

“Ivanhoe and our partners share a vision of the forces now shaping future markets for metals. Together, we will set an important example of business cooperation between China and Canada.

“Senior executives at Ivanhoe Mines and Ivanhoe Capital are looking forward to further strengthening our collaboration with Chinese companies and state-owned enterprises in mining development, energy conservation and environmental protection that could further contribute to economic successes that have been realized in China and elsewhere.”
